|08:27 am - On relative response|
When the I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed last night, I was sitting in a downtown theater watching the latest Harry Potter movie. (Quick review: It was OK, but I think I suffered a bit from not having read the books. I particularly liked the character of Luna and wished she had more screen time.) I got a call from Ericka during the film (and didn't answer because, duh, I was in a theater).
Ericka received calls from several of her relatives (all of whom are out of town) checking to make sure we were OK. Well Ericka rarely leaves the house so there was no danger there. I work downtown, so I suppose there could be some worry that I might be using that avenue out of the city on my way home.
None of my relatives called. Not even my brother who lives in a southern suburb (and works, coincidentally as a contractor at the same big corporation I do).
I don't know if this means that my relatives are less excitable than Ericka's, that they don't worry as much, that they paid more heed to the call to keep non-emergency calls to a minimum or what.
Whatever the reason, it struck me as interesting.

It is kindof interesting. I suspect part of it may depend on what people heard (if anything) and what sort of coverage they saw/read.
My folks were the ones who told me of the collapse and they made a couple other quick calls to me during the evening. They'd heard from my brother, my great aunt Pearl, and relatives in Atlanta. Probably another one or two.
We never heard from Kevin's family at all, which surprised me a little. A couple of calls came after 10pm, but one was a recording from Dave St. Peter about the Twins game and groundbreaking being postponed, the other was from a friend of Kevin's who tends to call late (and I don't think he was worried about us or anything).
I did drop them an email to say "we're okay".

Glad to know you are OK. I was asking about you in my searches online. :)
My brother still hasn't called, which I don't know how to take, as he has doesn't remember where abouts I work anymore. He knows where I live...
John's uncle called frantic and John did some preemptive phone calls to other family members, but that was it. Whatever it is you aren't alone.
My family hasn't called us at all. Neither has Bruce's.
