|12:53 pm - Plantillion|
I just got back from the annual Friends School Plant Sale at the Minnesota State Fair grounds. It's a huge sale and I only partake of a small part of it, but it is the highlight of my gardening year.
I'll be starting a new job on Monday so I didn't feel so extravagant about buying plants to expand some of my garden plots. When I lost my job, I figured I'd be doing it by propagating the plants I already had and I'll probably do some of that as well. There are some differences in where I'm planning to expand that I think some different species will do well for.
For example, I'm planning to expand the front prairie garden and hope to move it up to the front sidewalk. That means having a grass as the base that'll be a little lower than the Little Bluestem that makes up most of that garden. I also want something to plant along the borders that will help keep the quackgrass out if at all possible. So some Path Rush will be used in those efforts and we'll see how it goes.
The sale goes on through Sunday if you're local and looking for a good source of plants. They have all sorts from annuals to vegetables to shrubs and more. One of this year's features is an expanded offering of hostas. Their web site has great information and you can download their entire catalog as a PDF.
ETA: A run-down of my purchases in full:
- Blue Grama Grass Bouteloua gracilis
- Path Rush Juncus tenuis
- Palm Sedge Carex muskingumensis
- Prairie Blazing Star Liatris pycnostachya
- Blue-Eyed Grass Sisyrinchium angustifolium
- Purple Prairie Clover Dalea purpureum
- Pussytoes Antennaria plantaginata
Current Mood: happy
Oooh! I hope to make it there tonight or tomorrow! I could buy quite a bit, but I'll be happy with these.
1. It looks like my Jack in the Pulpit got eaten by a squirrel or bunny.
2. Really want some Pasque Flowers as a SD native, I feel it is my duty. :-)
3. Beeen wanting to add Raspberry to the yard.
4. Narrow-leaf Coneflower see #2
NOTE: I am glad that I checked the crop failures page because some of
what I wanted was on it!
thanks for the reminder post!

I heartily suggest going in the morning. By this evening things will be picked over but they resupply overnight. So there is a greater chance of getting what you want and getting a good specimen of what you want by going in the morning. They open at 10 and people will start lining up by 8, if not earlier. If you get there by about 9:30 or so, you'll be in good shape.

Path Rush half price
Hi, this is Pat from the Friends School Plant Sale... just saw the link from your site to ours.
In case you're interested in more of a good thing, I believe there is over a flat of Path Rush left that will be half price on Sunday. It looks beautiful and I couldn't figure out why no one bought it. (I do the inventory!)
