Got a text message from 90_percent_sure today, suggesting lunch. So I popped on to the Zipcar website, reserved a car and hopped the bus to its home on the East Bank of the U of MN. A few minutes later, I was in a pretty red Toyota Matrix named McKenna, cranking the XM radio and zipping back downtown to pick her up. We zipped across the river to the new Bulldog bar in Nordeast where Chef Emery is rumored to work. He apparently had today off, however, so a message was left with the waiter for him from his "Auntie Mary." Said message reading, "Re: lack of iced tea, 'God dammit!'"

Doing the Zipcar worked wonderfully and I can see where it will be handy to pick up the car after work in order to run an errand or make a visit somewhere. Getting the bus home from dropping it off will entail a brief walk across campus, but that won't be too much of a hassle in all but the most inclement weather. So, with one use under my belt, I'll go out on a limb and say I like this. I think it'll take a few months of use to evaluate the cost/benefit but this was a good start.

A red Toyota named McKenna? Hmmm... Do all Zipcars have their own names? It would be an easy way to request a specific car... "I'd like to make a date with Horatio the Honda." If my career in hand modeling doesn't pan out, I'd like a job naming cars!

Glad to hear your first Zipcar adventure was a success! :)

They do all have their own names! Parked next to McKenna was Estelle, the Honda Element. There is also an Element Eric on the West Bank. That's about it for cool names, though. The rest are named after places: Minneapolis, Minnesota and Minnetonka.
