So here we go:
Drakes: The mascot of Blackduck High School, from which I graduated as valedictorian before coming to the Cities to go to college.
Dharma: The teachings or religion of the Buddha. I've been attracted to Buddhism for many years, finding myself believing many of its principles before I discovered them.
Derivative: The mathematical expression representing the change in a function with respect to an independent variable. When I learned these in my freshman calculus class, all my high school physics suddenly made sense.
Depression: Both the psychological condition and the economic condition have had great effect on me. The former because I suffer from it and am now well-medicated to keep it in check. The latter, because much of the music I enjoy was spawned from that era; from Woody Guthrie to swing and the blues.
Dragon: The gaming magazine of TSR gave me my first taste of what gaming could be that was different than what my teenage friends and I did Sunday afternoons. It also introduced me to the idea of gaming conventions, resulting in me attending one at the U of MN my freshman year, which resulted in friendships that will last a lifetime.
Dalea: Specifically, Dalea purpurea, the purple prairie clover. One of many plants I've put in the ground over the last few years and one of the most important ones to the ongoing health of my prairie gardens.
Draft: As in, how to server a proper pint of Guinness.
Democracy: The basis of our form of government (yes, I know, republic...) representing the concept of one vote per person.
Decahedron: A solid figure with ten plane faces, most notably on the 10-sided die. One of the wonders of the first D&D box set I picked up was the polyhedral dice. Though they were cheap as hell and lost their edges quickly, I can't remember a world where dice only had six sides.
Diversion: As in something fun to do. One of my guiding principles is that life should be fun.
Now that I'm done (another D word!), I'll happy pass along the disease (another!), so comment if you want a letter with which to make a similar entry.
