I am greatly disturbed by the news that a 26-year-old Missouri woman was refused emergency contraception when she handed her prescription to a pharmacist at a Target store in Fenton, MO, on September 30. I did not realize that it was Target's policy that their pharmacist employees could refuse to fill a lawful prescription.
I am also confused from reports I read that one Jennifer Hanson has responded to this issue by claiming it is a policy that supports Target's policy of diversity. She reportedly responded to another guest thusly: "Like many other retailers, Target has a policy that ensures a guest's prescription for emergency contraception is filled, whether at Target or at a different pharmacy, in a timely and respectful manner. This policy meets the health care needs of our guests while respecting the diversity of our team members."
This seems in conflict with the statement by Bob Ulrich, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Target, on http://target.com/targetcorp_group/diversity/index.jhtml. I quote: "Target will remain dedicated to hiring a high-performing, diverse team, welcoming all guests into our stores, offering products that reflect the needs of all guests and giving back to the communities where we do business."
It seems to me that a pharmacist that refuses to fill a legal prescription could not be described as "high-performing." Further, refusing to fill a prescription could not be called "offering products that reflect the needs of all guests," and if, as Jennifer Hanson says, such prescriptions will be filled at another pharmacy how can that be called "welcoming all guests into [your] stores?"
Please respond to my concerns quickly. My own prescriptions are due for refill shortly and until these issues are clarified to my satisfaction, I will be having them filled at a different pharmacy.
