Ask Congress to Establish an Independent Commission and to Call for a Special Counsel to Investigate

I'm sickened by the photos and reports of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. Working with Amnesty International, I'm asking my member of Congress to establish an independent commission to investigate the human rights abuses at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, and other detention centers and a Special Counsel to conduct criminal investigations into administration officials who are suspected of having authorized or condoned these abuses or had command responsibility for them.

It is not enough to take to trial the enlisted personnel who committed specific acts that have been reported. Even if they were not specifically ordered to take these actions, it is the responsibility of those in command to know what their underlings are doing. Honor demands, at the very least, the resignation of officers in command of those that have been convicted.

When the top members of our government dismiss and degrade an organization with the long record of integrity that Amnesty International has, I fear for my fellow citizens who travel abroad, for the members of our military and State Department who are stationed overseas and for the reputation of our nation on the world stage.

I ask that you follow the link above and send email to your members of Congress urging them to take action on this matter.
