I have to wonder where that kind of sterner stuff comes from. I'm down wallowing in the mud. How does one put onesself above hate?

I'm surely not that good. But I'll aspire to be better.

It is difficult. I think, though, that one must go through to mud, as you say, to come out the other side. That is, I doubt that Mr. Washington was free from hate his entire life. The key point here, I think, is that hate harms the hater, not the hated. If one accepts and internalizes that premise, rising above hate becomes a simple survival mechanism.
