Reason #85 they won't put me in charge

I found out when I arrived at work last night that I would be filling in for my lead. No big deal, leading doesn't typically require a lot extra for me and, in a way, I feel a bit left out as I rarely get to do actual work while I'm leading.

One client had 66 pages in the shop and we were informed that more would be coming later in the night. Well, at 2:00 a.m., 208 pages came in with a due time of 9:00 a.m. The customer rep wanted to know if we'd be able to make that. I took a quick look through the job and came to the conclusion that we would not with the resources we had. If it was half that size, sure, no problem. Given the number of people on vacation and such, though, we were looking at something more like 12 hours to finish it, particularly since first shift would be staffed at a skeleton/holiday level.

Well, the customer service person didn't like that answer and changed the due time to ASAP. Fine, I said to myself, that's not going to get it done any faster, though.

A couple of hours later the rep called back for an update. By this time, we'd broken up the job to be worked and farmed about 80 pages of it out to our various offices across the country. Since all of them had proofreaders available to read the edits made by their folks, this would speed up the process of getting the changes made. We've been burned by other offices before, though, so I held firm to an 11-hour turn time. I don't want to be in the position of telling the rep it will make a certain time and then have the job go late.

Well, that just wasn't going to work. The sales guy was woken up. He called my expeditor who explained we had extra people working on it but that it could still get their after their 9:00 a.m. due time. He wasn't happy, so he called the regional manager. The regional manager called my grand-boss and she and my boss ended up coming in about 5:30 a.m.

A fire drill ensures in which we are told we must make the 9:00 a.m. due time. Fortunately, things are going well so I'm feeling better about the prospect but still have a little trepidation.

While others are stressing out because this is a big client, I'm remaining calm. There are, after all, only two possible outcomes: we will get it done or we won't. We're doing everything we can to get it done and it's looking good. People are pitching in extra where it will help and the other offices came through like champs. We made it with just under an hour to spare.

From my perspective, the work was no different in terms of what I would need to do than for any other client. This was an important client to the company as a whole, however, so the people who care about things at that level were in a tizzy. I guess I'm just not executive material.
