12:17 am - Back home, back at work
I returned from vacation on Saturday night, slept through most of Sunday and am now back at work. Vacation was wonderful and it's difficult to get back to this work thing. The idea of finding something else to do that is more fulfilling is even greater in my mind. I had a good phone interview with a place before I left, so I have to call them back now that I'm back in town and see if I can schedule a meeting.

After seeing Fahrenheit 9/11 on Friday, I'm glad to see it getting so much business and press over the weekend. I learned some things from the movie (Who knew Donald Rumsfeld could sing?) but I think that, overall, its greatest strength is that it strayed from Michael Moore's typical prank-loaded segments for the most part. The information on what the Bush family, their cronies and their Saudi allies are doing to this country and to the world is presented without a great deal of emotion. Moore's voice-over, of course, provides some of his views, but no one has, so far, been able to dispute the facts he's presented. The other big segment of the movie is the impact the war has had on a family from Moore's native Flint, MI. It tugs at the heart-strings, but it's good to see this story being told.

I dreamt last night that Neil Young re-released "Rockin' in the Free World" with a modified verse for all the young people who joined the National Guard as their only chance to get into college only to wind up dead in Iraq. It ends, of course, with the original "There's one more kid that'll never go to school; never get to fall in love; never get to be cool."

On the up-beat side, my prairie survived a week's neglect with flying colors. Only a few weeds found their way through the new mulch. (Thanks again to 90_percent_sure to turning me on to the cocoa shells!) Plants are growing well and many are hitting that "Oh, yeah...growing!" stage, where they have figured out that putting some additional stuff out above the ground will be a good idea. I'm looking forward to seeing how things develop over the summer.

Well, there is work to do, so I should get back to it. Additional updates later if there's time or need.

02:13 am - Hey, cool!
So after I got my regular Monday delivery of the time sheet for last week, showing that I was, indeed, on vacation (and how those hours off would be deducted), my manager came over and handed me an envelope with my name on it. It was a letter thanking me for hard work over the last couple of peak periods and highlighting some of the team's accomplishments. More surprising, however, was the $100 American Express Gift Check they included as well. Seems someone has gotten the message that cold, hard cash is a good motivator!
