I'm such a joiner....

I've seen a couple of other answers to this survey. I'm at work before anyone else and, to my surprise, there isn't some urgent task awaiting me. So, to fill time here's my responses:

NAME: Peter Hentges.

- LIVING ARRANGEMENT? I own a house in the Southeast Minneapolis neighborhood. (Which is actually north and east of downtown Minneapolis, but that's another story.) There I live with Ericka Johnson whom I've lived with in one place or another for going on 13 years now. We have two cats, Spook and Vegas. Spook we've had for as long as we've been together and is probably on the order of 17-19 years old. She was a stray Ericka picked up before I knew her (but then, I was too, kinda) and is black with yellow eyes. I saw a melanin leopard (i.e., a panther) at the Minnesota Zoo once who's coloring matched Spook's exactly. Vegas is a silver tabby with a few orangish highlights who is now nearly two. She was a stray found wandering on Lake Street early one morning and carted to our place. We also have a dog, Brandy, who is part Australian Shepherd and part some kind of huskie and maybe part Great Pyrenees. She's a big fluffy dog with a heart of gold who is getting to be about six.

-WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING NOW? I'm actually embarrassed to say that I'm not reading a book right now. No time for such at the moment. I do have a few books in my computer bag to read when I have a few moments. They are Ursula K. Le Guin's Steering the Craft and Ray Bradbury's Zen in the Art of Writing, two books about writing from authors that are engaging and fun to read, and Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em by Lee Jones, a book on poker.

-WHAT'S ON YOUR MOUSE PAD? I actually don't have a mouse pad at work currently, just mouse along on the desk surface. At home, the mouse pad is your basic black with a gel wrist support.

-FAVORITE BOARD GAME? I'd say, currently, I'm having the most fun playing a Civil War board game called "For the People." It's a historical war game that's also a lot of fun. I've learned more about the American Civil War playing that game than I did in high school.

-FAVORITE MAGAZINE? National Geographic. I don't have a subscription or anything, but it's always the magazine I'll pick up in a doctor's office. Or if I'm visiting someone who has a subscription and don't have anything else to do.

A-FAVORITE SMELLS? Baking bread and roasting garlic. Also wood smoke in the fall. And cigar humidors. And pipe smoke.

B-LEAST FAVORITE SMELLS? Varnish. Cigarette smoke.

-FAVORITE SOUND? A large group of people laughing. A large group singing together.

-WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD? The feeling I get when I've let someone down, particularly if I compromised my principles in doing so.

-WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING? Where are my glasses? Why must this cat get me up before my alarm has gone off? Do I have to get Ericka up today?

-FAVORITE COLOR Blue. I actually don't wear a lot of blue, other than jeans but it's the color I like to see most often. Probably one of the things that gets me through the Minnesota winter is that on the very coldest days, the sky is so clear and blue.

-HOW MANY RINGS BEFORE YOU ANSWER THE PHONE? Two, usually. At work, I'm getting into the habit of checking the caller ID our PBX passes along and letting long distance calls (which are typically sales calls) go into voice mail.

-WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR? I'm afraid of heights and speed, though that's moderating with age. I don't have any particular anxiety kinds of fears. Of the possible handicaps one could get, I'd probably least like deafness but I don't particularly fear it. I don't fear disease or disaster or violent crime enough to think about it.

-WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IN LIFE? For me, it is joy. I believe that everything in the universe is directed at trying to make us happy. (Not that it always succeeds, but it's trying.) My personal joy comes from aspects of creativity and discovery. I'm most happy seeing new things, making things, and/or sharing these with others.

-FAVORITE FOODS? The foods I eat most often are Cheerios and peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches. (Crunchy and strawberry. Other combinations are heretical.) The food I enjoy eating most is sushi and is what I will go out to eat most often. I'm also particularly fond of things I make from scratch.

-CHOCOLATE OR VANILLA? Chocolate.

-DO YOU LIKE TO DRIVE FAST? I can take it or leave it. Mostly I like to drive without having to touch my brake pedal. When gas prices started getting high last summer, I started driving 55 mph on my commute to work. It's surprising how much more relaxing it is in the right lane doing a steady pace (be it 55 or 20) than trying to drive as fast as possible and having to stop often.

-DO YOU SLEEP WITH A STUFFED ANIMAL? Nope. Never have. My brother had a stuffed dog as a kid, but I never had an stuffed animal. Ericka thought this was a travesty and got me my own bear shortly after we got together. I think it's in a box in the basement. I do like sleeping with live animals and have cuddled up with my dog many times and often have cats sleeping on me.

-STORMS - COOL OR SCARY? Cool. I'm one of those guys that will stand out in a thunderstorm and watch its pageantry.

-WHAT TYPE WAS YOUR FIRST CAR? The first car I bought and owned myself is my 1997 Saturn SL2. The first car I drove was my dad's 1970-something Buick LeSabre.

-IF YOU COULD MEET ONE PERSON DEAD OR ALIVE? Tough question. I'd have to go with someone that I shared a language with, so that leaves out cool people like Aristotle, Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Cleopatra, Lao Tzu, Buddha and even Jesus. The living person I'd probably most like to meet is Ursula K. Le Guin. Always been a favorite author of mine so I'll have to get out to a convention in the Pacific Northwest one of these years to meet her. Apart from that, I'd have to go with Gandhi. I think he'd be very interesting to talk to or even just to sit and watch for a while.

-FAVORITE ALCOHOLIC DRINK? The Bowmore 17 year old single malt Islay scotch whiskey.

-WHAT IS YOUR ZODIAC SIGN? Aries

-DO YOU EAT THE STEMS OF BROCCOLI? If I'm served them, yes.

-IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY JOB YOU WANTED WHAT WOULD IT BE? I think the job I'd be most happy at would be being a director. Not necessarily of plays or movies, but being the guy with the vision that brings out the best in the other members of the team to achieve a common goal.

-IF YOU COULD DYE YOUR HAIR ANY COLOR? I wouldn't. I like my hair color as it is.

-EVER BEEN IN LOVE? Oh yes. I am now.

-IS THE GLASS HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL? Currently, it's all the way empty, but I'll be filling it with tea when I'm done with this survey.

-FAVORITE MOVIE(s)? All time, I'll go with Casablanca. I don't really rank movies I've seen, however, and there are movies that I like that I don't think are particularly good and movies I think are excellent that I don't particularly like, if that makes sense.

A - MOST RECENT MOVIE YOU'VE SEEN? Hmm. I think the "Mists of Avalon" miniseries.

-DO YOU TYPE WITH YOUR FINGERS ON THE RIGHT KEYS? Yep. One of the most useful things I learned in high school was how to touch type with reasonable speed and accuracy.

-WHAT'S UNDER YOUR BED? I've got drawers under my bed that hold socks and underwear and those various things one likes to have near the bed but not out in the open.

-FAVORITE NUMBER? Again, I don't rank them, but I'd have to say pi is probably one of the coolest numbers.

-FAVORITE SPORT TO WATCH? Baseball. I'll pay money to watch a baseball game. While I'll catch football on TV or the occasional college basketball game, I won't fork over the money to sit in the stadium for them.
