Just some things I was thinking...

I wonder why I get hungry earlier in the day when I've had breakfast compared to when I skip it.

I'll tell you why if you tell me what you have for breakfast when you do eat it.

My standard breakfast is a bowl of Cheerios with rice milk and honey. I'll often have some fruit juice as well but not always.

You get hungry because all those carbohydrates are easily absorbed and your body processes them very quickly, then wants something else to work on. You get hungry less quickly when your system isn't kicked into high gear like that.

The way to have breakfast and get hungry a lot later is to have a protein and fat rich breakfast that will stay in your stomach longer and give you a feeling of saiety longer. An open-faced fried egg sandwich with melted cheese takes just a few minutes to make, as one example. I know you're a pb&j fan, as am I. That's got enough carbohydrates to overwhelm the pb's fat and protein ability to provide saiety, though it's better than the cereal. Try it and see.

If you are the sort of person who commonly gets pre-bedtime food cravings even if you're eaten regularly throughout the day, it's probably because you've had a high-carb (even if low in fat and calories) diet the days when you get the cravings.

I have a high-carb diet every day. Carbs is my major food group. Sigh. More evidence that I need to eat better. Have to figure out how to work that into my lifestyle.

We all have high carb diets. It's the easiest way to eat, no question. And making changes is hard, because we eat what we like and is simple and available.

Today, I had an egg fried hard (in butter), half a bagel with pb, a small glass of V-8, a large glass of water with a splash of Kool-Aid for flavor, and a cup of tea (which I haven't finished yet) for breakfast. That was over 4 hours ago, and I am not at all hungry right now.

The corollary to my original puzzlement is that I usually eat breakfast at about 7:00 a.m. and find myself hungry by 10:00 a.m. But when I eat lunch at about noon, I'm often not hungry until 8:00 p.m. It's weird.

(Lunch usually consisting of a sandwich, cookies and juice. The sandwich varies and could have meat or not.)
