03:29 pm - It's a job! (No, no. A Different One!)
I made a locked post earlier because I didn't want to screw anything up, but it is now official. I have, unfortunately, turned down the job at Prime Therapeutics and accepted a job as Webmaster at the University of Minnesota Supercomputing Institute. (My job will be to make the web page I've linked to better in several ways. Oh, the ways in which it needs to be better!)

The U job offers me less money than Prime was offering but has several advantages outside of money:
  • It is 1.8 miles from my house, as the bike rides or bus goes, as opposed to 13.2 miles as the car drives.
  • While benefits are roughly similar, the U also offers the opportunity for free classes.
  • It offers significantly greater responsibility in the work I'll be doing.
  • It is likely to be more layoff-proof.
  • The work atmosphere is decidedly laid back and casual.
  • (Newly discovered today:) I'll have a Mac as my main desktop machine.
So this seems to be just a great fit for me and I look forward to enjoying my work for a long time to come.

This information is available in alternative formats upon request by individuals with disabilities.

So if someone without a disability requests the information, it is not available? Yes, it needs to be better, and you're the guy to do it!

The Mac is a great perk. Leopard?

It'll be brand-new, I'm guessing, so yes, Leopard. Whee!

Just to say that I believe you made exactly the same decision I would have made in your place, and that your reasons for making that decision are excellent. It sounds marvelous. And I had a good time during the 14 months I worked at the U (in the early 1980s); if nothing else, the places you can walk to on your breaks are interesting. (I was two floors up from a marvelous cafeteria that often had strawberry shortcake.) And doesn't it already look as though there are going to be numerous good people you already know, whom you can meet for lunch?

In any event, way to go. Congratulations!

Nate

Indeed, there are marvelous people like alisgray and kalmn for having lunch with. (And I think our mutual friend Judy C., if she hasn't retired, among others.) The U environment, with galleries and lectures and speakers and events is also a perk to not be forgotten.

You can add me to that lunching list - I will be at the Humphrey Institute starting 1/7/08! Welcome to the U!

Back in 1998 I made the decision to go for the academia job over the industry job. I'm still here and happy to be. Commute distance and desktop platform were two big factors for me, too....

I thought you got a super-computer as your desktop machine. Rip!

What, telnet? It's 2007. Use ssh.

Leopard, btw, has a built-in ssh-agent that is Keychain-aware. Very spiffy.

Congratulations! I'm very happy for you. When we chatted you sounded like you were leaning that way; I hope it turns out to be everything you could hope for.
