I've updated my list of self-defined "classic" SF&F to indicate that I've finished To Your Scattered Bodies Go by Philip Jose Farmer. I've started on The Fountains of Paradise and am finding it familiar. I feel as if I've read it before and only remembered parts of it. Of course, I could be conflating other Space Elevator stories as the concept has intrigued me for quite a while.
Wasn't it a Heinlein story that suggested that all space traffic go through the Space Elevator as a means of controlling the plague? The fleas that passed it along would not survive the high altitudes that served as the base for the Elevator? Of course, the most recent proposals I've seen suggest a terrestrial base for the elevator in the Pacific, so that would thwart that idea.
